Wildlife & Conservation

At De Zalze we promote sustainability and we are obligated to conserve and protect all of our wildlife. Through establishing more local biodiversity, we have more and more visits from some familiar, and some new, fauna. We have a significant variety of birdlife both resident and visitors to the Estate.

A Sustainable Future

A delicate balance, an international treasure and a unique responsibility. Being part of the Unesco World Network of Biosphere Reserves due to the Blaauwklippen River flowing through the Estate, De Zalze is committed to the Biosphere goal of promoting sustainable development based on local community efforts and sound science.

This involves reconciling conservation with biological and cultural diversity and economic and social development through partnerships between people and nature.

Social Responsibility

Ensuring a sustainable future for the Estate relies heavily on forming and maintaining mutually beneficial partnerships with surrounding communities. De Zalze’s Special Management Area (SMA) Trust was formed with this in mind.

Its primary object is management of the conservation, rehabilitation and protection of the natural environment, including flora and fauna, within the Estate by means of the establishment of a special management area. Secondly, to maintain the SMA in accordance with an environmental management plan by utilising labour from surrounding communities to clear dams of reeds and weeds and to eradicate a lien plants and open waterways.

Green Practices

Conservation-minded actions on the Estate are aimed at not only preserving natural assets through the eradicating of resource-hungry aliens, but to further ensure sustainability through the replacement of fauna and flora with resource-friendly indigenous species.

De Zalze’s current conservation efforts are being focused in five areas:

Eradication of alien species of floating and submerged aquatic weeds
Improved, representative indigenous landscaping
Eradication of alien trees and replanting with indigenous trees
Removal of alien fish species and restocking with indigenous fish species
Re-introduction of indigenous fauna
